The impact of chronic stress on wellbeing and our physical health is well documented. However, as neurodivergent individuals, we are sometimes unaware of the stressors around us, because they may not register as stressors for neurotypical people. Simply put, we often have more invisible stressors that require our attention.
This 17-page document can be a handy tool for individuals, families and clinicians who are trying to increase their nervous system regulation by reducing stress on it. It builds upon the work of Dr Stuart Shanker’s Self-Reg model, and neuroqueers it by integrating sensory stressors, the Double Empathy problem, and co-occurring health conditions known in Autism and ADHD. It includes questionnaires to use with clients as well as ideas and recommendations for support.
Not designed to be an exhaustive checklist, but an excellent starting point that opens conversations and builds awareness of invisible stressors.
To building a regulated life.
