Neurodivergent experiences don’t exist in a vacuum. (Shocking, we know—it’s almost like we’re whole, complex humans or something.)
They’re shaped by culture, family systems, identity, and access to support. Buuuuuut… a lot of traditional approaches seem to have missed that memo.
At Onwards and Upwards Psychology, we get that you are not just your neurotype. You’re an entire universe of culture, gender identity and expression, race, class, family, history, and yes—neurodivergence too. All of it matters. All of it counts.
We invite others (okay, we actively challenge them) to look at culture as a lens for neuroaffirming practice. Because here’s the thing: there is no one-size-fits-all approach to understanding behaviour, disability, or wellbeing.
Cookie-cutter solutions? Not here. Individualised, thoughtful, actually-see-you-as-a-person support? That’s more our speed.

Process. Slowly, and gently. How are you feeling about it? Sit with the deep knowledge of recognition, of knowing they are the same child they were prior to the diagnosis, as well as there are ways to understand their neurotype. If you’d like to learn more, we’ve got a comprehensive course for you and your partner to do (go to Parenting Support) or feel free to check out our Resources tab to get started.
Neutrally, the same way you might explain differences in skin or eye colour. Differences are part of being human, and understanding your unique self is something to celebrate. Our guides on Talking to Your Child About an Autism/ADHD Diagnosis can help walk you through it and create a discussion point. Alternatively, The Brain Forest is a wonderful place to start.
Parenting courses that are disability specific are still eligible to be claimed under line item 15_038_0117_1_3 in Improved Daily Living Skills. Whether you can claim it depends on your plan, whether education aligns with the goals set out on it, and budget allocations. It is always best to speak to your support coordinator or plan manager to discuss.
Drop us a line under Contact! From there, we’ll have you fill out a form that explores what you’re looking for, set up a 15 to 30 minute phone call and provide you with a personalised quote that aligns with your organisational needs.
